Thinking Thru Making: Mapping Computational Thinking Practices onto Scientific Reasoning

چکیده

Abstract This paper shares findings from a teacher designed physics and computing unit that engaged students in learning concurrently thru inquiry. Using scientific inquiry skills practices, were tasked with assessing the validity of local rollercoaster g-force ratings as posted to public. Students used computational electronic textile circuits (e-textiles) engage “myth busting” amusement park ratings. The Generality of Hypothetico-Deductive Reasoning: Making Scientific Thinking Explicit

LEWIS (1988) made the case that today’s biology is essentially hypothetico-deductive in nature. In Lewis’s view, biology is not a science in which one gathers all the facts, classifies them and then somehow crystallizes them into theory. In Lewis’s words, ‘‘This erroneous view of method plus the absence of a proper definition of theory misguided my early development in science’’ (p. 362). The f...

Computational thinking and thinking about computing

Computational thinking will influence everyone in every field of endeavour. This vision poses a new educational challenge for our society, especially for our children. In thinking about computing, we need to be attuned to the three drivers of our field: science, technology and society. Accelerating technological advances and monumental societal demands force us to revisit the most basic scienti...

Thinking about play: Young children’s spontaneous experiments and scientific reasoning

This paper explores the relationship between young children’s ability to spontaneously generate controlled experiments in free play, and more explicit scientific reasoning skills, such as describing causal relationships learned through experimentation. Children aged 4-6 played with objects in a touchscreen tablet app game. Most of these children spontaneously produced controlled experiments tha...
